Is the Gehl belt driven from the PTO to the hammer-mill shaft like Dad's old IH mill? If so, I would do away with the PTO pulley and belt drive from the engine to the hammer-mill shaft using the proper pulley size on the engine to get the right speed. The IH had a pretty good speed increase from the 540 PTO to the hammer-mill shaft.

RickB - 2/16/2014 16:32 There's no good reason to go out & buy Gehl farm equipment if you don't already own it. Parts support is bad, and will only get worse. Gehl abandoned the farm equipment business several years ago. That said, 65 PTO HP will run most 9' roll conditioner type disc mower conditioners, but it won't run away with it, especially on hills or in tall, dense crop.

Family had a hammermill powered by a Farmall M pulley and belt. Got tired of hooking up the M and belt every time we needed it, so we got an old Olds Rocket 88 V8 engine and trans, built a frame out of 8X10s and hooked it up permanently. Pulled the pulley off the mill, made a short driveshaft and hooked them up. Worked like a charm. Noah W
